Independent Artist

SAW provides a self-funded Independent Artist Residency opportunity for artists to fully immerse themselves in new projects and ideas in a creative environment, free from everyday pressures and concerns.

Rolling application Deadline!

Artists entering through this program typically have a clear and focused plan. Artists can rent facilities they are familiar with, or schedule instruction to receive training. An artist may, for example, reserve the glass shop to create a sculpture on their own or make arrangements with a gaffer to explore the medium for the first time.

Visual artists working in any medium, as well as writers, choreographers, musicians, and performers, are invited to apply throughout the year on a rolling basis. Artists may propose to stay for any dates and duration available, however applicants are strongly encouraged to contact SAWs office prior to applying to discuss their residency proposal in detail, well in advance of their planned stay.

In keeping with Salem Art Works’ mission to create a collaborative and open space for art making, each independent artist is encouraged to contribute to the communal life at SAW including doing an artist talk and presentation, participating in studio visits and critiques, and open studios. Artists who are working and staying onsite for more than one week may anticipate participating in a weekly cooking and cleaning schedule.
