Painting as Metaphor

July 11 - 13

This 3-day workshop will focus on using metaphors as inspiration for creating abstract oil paintings. Students will approach the idea of creating paintings that map out the landscape of the mind by investigating  and examining the notion of constructing a painting like a collage or narrative. Through discussion, students will incorporate imagery to create running metaphors within each painting.

Students are encouraged to bring a collection of objects, photos, poems, and writing.  Each student will receive a basic oil-painting material supply list to bring to the class.

Silk-Screen Workshop

July 12 - 13 

9:30 am to 4:30 pm 

Instructor: Chase Winkler 

Rate $150

Level: Beginner

Age: 14+* 

This 2-day workshop will focus on an overview of basic methods and techniques used in screen printing. Students will create bold, graphic images based on pictures, sketches and photos they bring along with them. Students have the potential to walk away from this workshop with a large series of prints.  Usable materials include heavyweight paper, cotton shirts, canvas rag, linen, etc. Note: Do not bring fuzzy materials or nylon.

Students are encouraged to bring sketches/images to work from. Be prepared to get a little messy, consider wearing old clothes.

Welding 2: Advanced Welding Building Sculptures with Found Objects

July 12 - 13

9:30 am to 4:30 pm

Level: Intermediate - Advanced

Age: 18+

This 2-day workshop is offered to students who have some welding experience and wish to learn more in-depth techniques and  incorporating other materials in creating sculpture. Students will have access to oxy-acetylene for cutting and bending, MIG welders, and finishing tools as well as materials.

Thoughts into Words, creative writing workshop

July 12th, 19th, 26th, and August 2nd

9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Level: all levels of motivated writers are welcome. 

Ages 18+

This workshop will focus on encouraging each participant’s emergent writer’s voice though a series of engaging writing activities; sensory-sharpening hikes and field trips; free writing time in and around the campus; sharing and critiquing sessions; and optional individual portfolio reviews. Participants will explore critical facets of writing by considering topics including a writer’s voice/a reader’s ear; understanding the role emotional and human characters play in a piece’s evolution; and creating a physical, sensory and emotional geography in their writings. 

Summer Iron Intensive

July 14th - 19th (Iron Pour on July 19th)

9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Instructor: Michael Bonadio

Rate: $350 plus materials fees

Level: All levels

Age: 18+

Learn the exciting process of making sand molds and participate in an iron pour. In this 5-day workshop Foundary Director, Micheal Bonadio will teach participants how to make custom molds, and the start to finish process of pouring iron. participants will leave this intensive with a completed project. All skill levels will be accommodated. 

$.50 per lb. of iron
$20 per lb. of 100 lbs. sand
$5 per lb. of wax

Requirements: closed toe shoes and heavy cotton jean pants.  Safety Gear will be provided.
