Fellowship Artists | Studio Artists | Young Artists

The 2018 application period for Fellow, Studio, and Young Artist residencies is now closed. Please consider applying for an Independent Artist residency. Independent Artist applications are rolling; artists are awarded residencies throughout the year.

About

The ethos of Salem Art Works is rooted in convergence and collaboration. This belief extends to every residency program we offer and informs all aspects of life at SAW.

Artists of all ages, backgrounds, and career stages--working in nearly any mode or medium imaginable--are encouraged to apply for residencies at SAW.

We offer four subsidized Artist Residency programs. These residencies—for Fellows, Emerging Fellows, Studio Artists and Young Artists—take place primarily in the summer months, and range from two weeks to two months. Artists may only apply to one of these programs each year, please review the detailed program descriptions and application guidelines below.

Fellowship Artist Program

SAW awards fellowships to support artists to create new work at Salem Art Works. Visual artists working in any medium, as well as writers, choreographers, musicians, and performers, may apply.

Successful applicants are typically mid-career or established artists, however, an emerging artist who believes his or her work to be of exceptional merit may apply; the application provides an option to select "Emerging Fellow" or "Fellow" for these artists to identify themselves.

The Fellowship ranges from two to six weeks. While most residencies take place June through September, SAW does have a limited number of opportunities for fellows wishing to conduct residencies at other times during the year.

Artists receive trailer or room, board, studio, full access to SAWs facilities, and one complimentary weekend workshop. Artists also have access to technical support in any of SAW’s facilities; blacksmithing, ceramics, CNC machine, foundry, glass, screen printing, metal fabrication, and the wood shop for the exploration of new disciplines.

Residents will be responsible for the cost of additional workshops, materials, and travel to and from Salem Art Works. All residents, including Fellows, also help with cooking and cleaning on a rotating schedule. Working with SAW staff, Fellows will assist with mentoring other residents in their professional development by participating in artist presentations, studio visits and critiques, open studios, and resident artist exhibitions.
