In this intensive workshop, participants will observe and practice several fundamental techniques used in metal fabrication. Time will be split between demonstration and assisted hands-on practice. The instructor will demonstrate the safe and proper use of a variety of equipment, then students will choose metal scrap material to create a sculpture of their design. Techniques covered include heating, bending, and cutting using an oxy-acetylene torch, cutting using a plasma cutter, MIG & TIG welding.

This two-day, twelve-hour workshop is available for beginners with no prior experience, but is also useful for people with some prior experience as well.

The first day will focus on learning how to use the equipment and building skills, with the second day focusing on fabrication.

Students must wear closed-toed shoes (boots preferred), have long hair tied back, a hat or bandana (recommended), and long pants. Wear natural-fibered clothing and avoid synthetic fabrics.

With basic “tools” producing an accurate depiction of what’s in front of you is easy! (no it’s hard, but achievable) In this workshop, Matt Chinian will introduce the “sight-size” method, a basic concept in observational realism, and how to apply it to painting urban landscapes. Matt Chinian will do a short demo, then we will spread out on the SAW campus and paint.

We will work on composition, value, color, and the use of mass and line in painting. Color mixing and paint application will also be introduced. Participants should bring their own brushes, easel, etc. Please contact us if you don’t have your own and need to borrow some of ours.

Ages 16 and up.

Interested in ceramics and learning how to throw on a wheel? Now is your chance! This two-day course will teach you how to throw a pot on the wheel from pulling your clay out of the bag to removing your pot from the wheel.

This pottery wheel course is for first-time beginners new to throwing on the pottery wheel and for intermediate skill level students who want to brush up on their skills or troubleshoot their skills for quicker success. During this weekend workshop, you will make between three to six vessels that will be fired at a later date in our kiln. The materials fee includes 12 lbs of clay and 0.50 cubic ft of kiln space.

Learn the ancient craft of grinding pigments from local minerals and clay.

In this workshop, plein air/abstract artist Laura Leigh Lanchantin will walk through the traditional method of creating oil and watercolor paint from Catskill and Appalachian sedimentary rock/clay. This includes gathering stones, milling pigments, and applying these paints to your painting process.

Laura will also discuss basic geology, the history of pigments, safety procedures, and areas of the Appalachian and Green Mountains where she collects her stones.

Each student will have the opportunity to create a small watercolor palette to take home. The end of the workshop will feature an open-paint session with pigments, charcoal, and watercolor mediums.

Hammer and anvil use to perform the basic techniques of drawing out, tapering, hot cutting, upsetting, bending, and curling will be covered. Students will develop the skills and confidence to work independently on basic blacksmithing projects suggested by the instructor.
