Forge a Hatchet w/ Luke Claymon
Forge a Hatchet w/ Luke Claymon
Make your very own Throwing Axe or Kindling Hatchet!
In addition to forging a fully functional handled tool, participants will learn the basics of starting and managing a coal forge fire to achieve optimum working temperatures.
These tools will be forged from 4" of O1 tool steel with special attention given to the heat-treating process. The "eye" holes will be punched using sledgehammers and formed using drifts. The blades will primarily be hand forged, though the 50# power hammer can be employed for some of the heavier work. After grinding and heat-treating, hardwood handles will be carved and fitted to finish the tool.
Students must wear closed-toed shoes, have hair tied, a hat or bandana (recommended), and long pants. Wear natural-fibered clothing- synthetic fabrics can melt and catch fire when exposed to heat.
